Learn more about who we are and what brought us to the community!
An Evanston, Illinois native, Matthew has always believed that music is about more than just hitting the right notes. For him, it is about connection.
Currently, Matthew serves as the Assistant Principal of a middle school in Skokie, Illinois. His commitment to growth and leadership is backed by 25 years of gospel choir directing and teaching experience. This extensive background is paired with a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Michigan State University, a Master of Music Education from Vandercook College of Music, and a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from the American College of Education.
Before founding Beloved Community Gospel Choir, Matthew served as the director of the College of Lake County Gospel Choir. When he is not leading a school or a rehearsal, you might find him on stage in Jeff-nominated productions like Godspell or Songs for a New World.
Matthew’s heart for the "Beloved Community" is at the core of everything we do. Whether he is leading a rehearsal or performing on a Chicago stage, his goal is simple: to create a space where every voice is heard and every person is welcome.
Kelly NeulsKelly was born and raised in Round Lake, Illinois and has had a diverse and, frankly, weird path that brought her to gospel music. As a non-believer, it seems odd that she would be so involved in the group but ask her and she'll tell you, "there's a spirit in the room on Monday night! Some call it God, I call it music". She is a living testament to Matthew's goal to have this be a welcome space for EVERYONE!
Kelly's main role is to keep everything running. As Matthew's right-hand-gal, she keeps track of all the details so Matthew can focus on the music.
